<br />
Music productivity on the AKAI S900 could be greatly improved by having a better display available and also units with a faulty LCD could benefit from a <b>CV output MOD</b>.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGCbbYhGuX7-BfPi95QZ5hcoGaBgnvY1UmxznkPqw73n_LWJXgNUncxv5s5aB-1m7JHcqXA4fT2fXk6l9G1pCxZa830eJxvnKMZ3shXFG-KBdlojEAGsiOlBrP11iopvSPzD_zd9dJHMqZ/s1600/20200329_133607_WEB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGCbbYhGuX7-BfPi95QZ5hcoGaBgnvY1UmxznkPqw73n_LWJXgNUncxv5s5aB-1m7JHcqXA4fT2fXk6l9G1pCxZa830eJxvnKMZ3shXFG-KBdlojEAGsiOlBrP11iopvSPzD_zd9dJHMqZ/s320/20200329_133607_WEB.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I've used an Arduino Leonardo to develop this mod because <a href="https://playground.arduino.cc/Main/TVout/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Arduino already had ready-to-go CV output options</a> available therefore most of the work was about writing a <b>piece of code to decode signals from the AKAI S900 to the LCD display</b>. These ones are digital data, so most of the stuff is a bounce of 1s and 0s which need to be translated into pixels. As soon as the current buffer changes the old one is shifted up on the screen and the new one displayed; this "memory" feature was quite easy to do.<br />
<br />
After some days of testing I was finally able to get something on screen and I'm super excited! However as it's possible to see from the picture, the unit locks as soon as some floppy command is issued. This is quite a Mistery to me, I assumed the display was completely separated from the audio hardware. My guess is that the LCD sends back some sort of feedback to the OS which in turn is not liking what the Arduino is sending (acually, nothing...). At this point I need to figure out how to fix this problem before considering to release even a Beta of the MOD to the public and I hope to get some help from outside.KONEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04886063362189533379noreply@blogger.com3Mestre, Venice, Metropolitan City of Venice, Italy45.4934881 12.246318145.4044006 12.0849566 45.5825756 12.4076796tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7631833947586988830.post-58278239665911614202011-11-10T11:42:00.000-08:002011-11-10T11:42:51.864-08:00Alesis SR-16 Drummachine samples<a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3066410/ALESIS_SR16_Kit.zip"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">DOWNLOAD</span></a> - <a href="http://akai-s900.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-transfer-floppies-to-pc.html">How to put it on disk</a><br />

Usually I care about samples dimension as the S900 has only 720kB of unexpandable memory but sample waveforms, or "grains", are so small in size there's really no worry.<br /><br />The waveforms sound quite close to the real <a href="http://www.synthmuseum.com/roland/rolsh901.html" target="_blank">SH-09</a>, even when layering together the squarewave + SUBOSC the result is similar. What starts to go crazy is when I hit two different keys, blending two sounds at different pitches: the AKAI poliphony starts to show its limits so the harshness is guaranteed. <br /><br />Being the SH-09 a typical techno machine the resulting sounds are quite oldschoolish but the screaming effects are of course totally different: here it's the AKAI S900 character showing off.KONEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04886063362189533379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7631833947586988830.post-86667835012959121952009-12-07T09:45:00.000-08:002009-12-07T09:51:07.584-08:00KONEY INDUSTRIAL BLOGI am running another new blog focused on the production of industrial music, something the AKAI S900 helped and inspired me a lot about.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6aftCEzKDs_4wcvo3YOVnNJAqvIdcUpvW8MyV7RnBgvuaghrBMhHMWe5wv2eoiMSXVoGoY2fChPqawHPCE51wr9T3iAD4fZyOgBXCudGntx4aEBs3RvFB9BjikjUjR2zOLzP3AoS-Liy9/s1600-h/koneyblog.png"><img style="display:block; They have an unique character and even if they work at 12-bits the punch delivered is massive, and holes your mix easily. Its sound is really cool, I can browse 100 samples loading them into Kontakt or any other Vsampler and it's very difficult to find something not boring, not dull, not already heard. Put the same samples into the AKAI S900 and they start kicking and stimulating again. Maybe it's me? I bet most people hasn't been lucky enough to find out theirself...<br /><br />More reasons:<br /><br />Well a sampler is useful to <a href="http://akai-s900.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-to-load-samples-from-akai-s900-to.html">load</a> "side" sounds that don't need that much versatility, like some snare, hi-hats, or whatever, so one gets a few channel freed from the audio card. Not bad.<br /><br />Can be used as an FX as <a href="http://akai-s900.blogspot.com/2008/02/how-to-use-akai-s900-as-effect-unit.html">described here</a>: if you are lazy and you really need modern plugins' features you can run the final signal into it and get AKAI sound for any audio source. Nice. Very nice as a distortion unit also.<br /><br />It can sound stupid, but sometimes take your head out of the monitor and program sounds on a LCD display can help you to distract a little and find new ways to do things. Different ideas emerge from different approaches. Tools are not only devices to develop already shaped ideas, they are also ways to shape new ideas...<br /><br />This sounds like a 1986 commercial...;)KONEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04886063362189533379noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7631833947586988830.post-59258624232560942872008-10-27T14:29:00.000-07:002009-12-14T02:28:47.585-08:00Reaktor KIT #1<a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3066410/AKAI_S900_REAKTOR_KIT_1.zip"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">DOWNLOAD</span></a> - <a href="http://akai-s900.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-transfer-floppies-to-pc.html">How to put it on disk</a><br /><br /><br />A collection of samples taken from a Reaktor patch that I like very much! Don't try with STEREO, they won't work.<br />Samples will be truncated to 12 bit automatically.<br /><br />ALSO IMPORTANT: Be aware that the AKAI S900 samplers need to "handshake" so the MIDI IN and the MIDI OUT need BOTH to be connected to the computer.<br /><br />Transfer is a little slow, patience. Better save them to floppy as soon as they're uploaded on the AKAI...<br /><br />If you experience losses on name files or weirdness in sample start/end try uploading the sample just after having switched the AKAI on and save the sample immediately to disk. This way you just upload->save, upload->save and you don't lose any data. Remember: If you run OS 4 on the AKAI you must turn off S<span style="font-style: italic;">AMPLE COMPRESSION</span> from the <span style="font-weight: bold;">DISK</span> menu, or you won't be able to access sample data later.<br /><br />You should end up with a<span style="font-style: italic;"> .IMG</span> file on your computer.<br /><br />Change extension of that file to<span style="font-style: italic;"> .RAW</span> and load it on Wavelab. You will be prompted to provide some information about data format. Behave as follows:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPfK0S-S55nHMSY0ZxcqD10XDvrRTcIkXkgrXMMvAWW-ntAquxX28D2xC7G_TWakAIP6obX_zEx7E-dFJsBUY8OHADOT8wZtZhFgCsxBnTB6VlNRDdKtLVKW4n_ahx5eUVeB4vlOP5cBDH/s1600-h/wavelab_format.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPfK0S-S55nHMSY0ZxcqD10XDvrRTcIkXkgrXMMvAWW-ntAquxX28D2xC7G_TWakAIP6obX_zEx7E-dFJsBUY8OHADOT8wZtZhFgCsxBnTB6VlNRDdKtLVKW4n_ahx5eUVeB4vlOP5cBDH/s400/wavelab_format.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5162143649097531346" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mono, 44.100 Hz, 16 bit, Little endian.</span><br /></div><br />If you use a different sample editor you may need to experiment a little with configurations, but shouldn't be too difficult to get the same results.<br /><br />Now you have the floppy image data loaded as sample. The very first part usually will be some noise, as it's the interpretation of programs, disk format and other data different from samples. But the rest are your samples, one after the other. Simply cut and save them as <span style="font-weight: bold;">1</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">6bit MONO .WAV </span>files.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinN-bk8s6z28Lp3VRzIXSm1-ArANxgLhbbOIQp0iUdg6UDkSRfMrps-9cg_eGDSnOzKdTEAxTuJaIcQgplxneHfRGU5TTEzlflbB52AO_1unMlXTYd0pMM3adaSQZryVVwIgeddejQNwOU/s1600-h/wave.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinN-bk8s6z28Lp3VRzIXSm1-ArANxgLhbbOIQp0iUdg6UDkSRfMrps-9cg_eGDSnOzKdTEAxTuJaIcQgplxneHfRGU5TTEzlflbB52AO_1unMlXTYd0pMM3adaSQZryVVwIgeddejQNwOU/s400/wave.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5162161997197819954" border="0" /></a><br />This is the easiest and fastest way to transfer samples to a PC. If you scan the net most people is telling that you need AKAIDISK. And most people is telling one needs Win98 too<br /><br />WRONG!<br /><br />You can read/write Akai S900 disks with <a href="http://www.shlock.co.uk/Utils/OmniFlop/OmniFlop.htm" target="blank">Omniflop</a>, and it works flawlessly under XP. (actually ONLY XP is supported!) (<span style="font-style:italic;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">EDIT 02/18/2010: Omniflop 2.2c has been reported to work with Vista)</span><span style="font-style:italic;"></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">WHAT YOU NEED:</span><br /><ol><li>PC with floppy drive (not USB!)</li><li>Registered Onmiflop program (it's free)</li><li>AKAI S900/s950</li><li>Floppies (Modern HDs work ok, just put some tape on the HD hole...)</li><li>Samples</li><li>Patience :)</li></ol><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">WHAT TO DO:</span><br /><br />First install Omniflop. Later on, when trying to read a disk it will ask for a key and if you don't have it already the wizard will ask to mail the author to get one. Mail him and get your key. (he's very kind and usually replies within 24h. EDIT: I see from the site that now registration is done via WWW...)<br /><br />Get a floppy, if it's HD put some tape in the hole.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Pag17nCPdjytn0PxaxYF4Pl_RSTjYsadicJE-ocBKNct2vwJNL-G0T4P0hfckSYjtgy9Phy-merPXQ39pbXsy58FoNWOxeQh697LxuI5xKfeJ2LnSleBsfeSmBv4BEQvcseVNmPwP-LF/s1600-h/floppies_tape.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Pag17nCPdjytn0PxaxYF4Pl_RSTjYsadicJE-ocBKNct2vwJNL-G0T4P0hfckSYjtgy9Phy-merPXQ39pbXsy58FoNWOxeQh697LxuI5xKfeJ2LnSleBsfeSmBv4BEQvcseVNmPwP-LF/s400/floppies_tape.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5162126774171025298" border="0" /></a><br />Format the taped disk in the S900 and save some samples on it.<br /><br />If you are running <a href="http://wiw.org/%7Emeta/s900os4.tar.gz">OS 4</a> on your AKAI and want to access the samples later from the PC remember to disable "<span style="font-style: italic;">SAMPLE COMPRESSION</span>" from the DISK menu. If you just plan to backup your floppies you can leave compression ON.<br /><br />Fire up your <a href="http://www.shlock.co.uk/Utils/OmniFlop/OmniFlop.htm">Omniflop</a>, do the free registration thing, and set it in READ DISK mode using its simple wizard. When it comes to select a format choose the following:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUup4Y1k_rN4Pq3n-lqL0FeSE-WIzqBCknwRLIz7GQtfJ6P0Gnfirke_Pc0kmbRvaw9crtWM0_A1slBeDI7Eq3JUJDHENeTOQCrwAMGJySZZ6JNIDbkgIxv5ZKnT6YQDzRHr-h1OdvOpIV/s1600-h/diskformat.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUup4Y1k_rN4Pq3n-lqL0FeSE-WIzqBCknwRLIz7GQtfJ6P0Gnfirke_Pc0kmbRvaw9crtWM0_A1slBeDI7Eq3JUJDHENeTOQCrwAMGJySZZ6JNIDbkgIxv5ZKnT6YQDzRHr-h1OdvOpIV/s400/diskformat.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161803895709581186" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic;">AKAI S-Series DD-disk 800Kb. </span>This is very easy...<br /><br /><br /></div>Now insert the AKAI floppy in the PC drive. and go "NEXT" <span style="font-weight: bold;">REMEMBER TO WRITE PROTECT THE DISK AND PUT SOME TAPE ON THE HD HOLE!</span> If you don't write protect it and something goes wrong you may lose you data. You've been warned...<br /><br />Now save the file, use <span style="font-style: italic;">.img</span> extension.<br /><br />Your backup is done.
