I commited myself to use my spare quaranTime to finish as many of my unfinished projects as possible and this MOD was one of the best candidates.
Music productivity on the AKAI S900 could be greatly improved by having a better display available and also units with a faulty LCD could benefit from a CV output MOD.
I've used an Arduino Leonardo to develop this mod because Arduino already had ready-to-go CV output options available therefore most of the work was about writing a piece of code to decode signals from the AKAI S900 to the LCD display. These ones are digital data, so most of the stuff is a bounce of 1s and 0s which need to be translated into pixels. As soon as the current buffer changes the old one is shifted up on the screen and the new one displayed; this "memory" feature was quite easy to do.
After some days of testing I was finally able to get something on screen and I'm super excited! However as it's possible to see from the picture, the unit locks as soon as some floppy command is issued. This is quite a Mistery to me, I assumed the display was completely separated from the audio hardware. My guess is that the LCD sends back some sort of feedback to the OS which in turn is not liking what the Arduino is sending (acually, nothing...). At this point I need to figure out how to fix this problem before considering to release even a Beta of the MOD to the public and I hope to get some help from outside.

Welcome to my AKAI S900 blog!
Here we go. It was a while ago that came to me this idea to put all the knowledge I have about this fantastic sampler together in a sort of site/blog/page.

Since it is quite difficult to gather CORRECT information about this device I decided to try to make life of other users easier. I use the AKAI in a modern studio and I've managed to interface it in a quite productive way.
Basically I also hope to meet more enthusiasts to share whatever can be shared about my favorite sampler.
See you soon.

AKAI S900 as a Granular Synthesizer
DOWNLOAD - How to put it on disk
Recently I've done an experiment with granular synthesis, small sampled waveforms looped to obtain a continuos sound.

I chopped some waveforms from my Roland SH-09 samplekit and MIDI dumped them into the AKAI S900. Usually I care about samples dimension as the S900 has only 720kB of unexpandable memory but sample waveforms, or "grains", are so small in size there's really no worry.
The waveforms sound quite close to the real SH-09, even when layering together the squarewave + SUBOSC the result is similar. What starts to go crazy is when I hit two different keys, blending two sounds at different pitches: the AKAI poliphony starts to show its limits so the harshness is guaranteed.
Being the SH-09 a typical techno machine the resulting sounds are quite oldschoolish but the screaming effects are of course totally different: here it's the AKAI S900 character showing off.

KONEY INDUSTRIAL BLOG
I am running another new blog focused on the production of industrial music, something the AKAI S900 helped and inspired me a lot about.

Here I will speak about Industrial Electronic music production, gear, plug-ins, software, visuals, concepts, tunes and sounds, samples, links and whatever could be related.
I'm not a news hunter so expect to see my thoughts and experiences about the said topics rather than an updated list of the latest stuff released.
Topics about the AKAI S900 will be crsss-posted in both blogs.
See you there!

The mysterious symbol
I've been trying to fetch some informations about this alien rune that appears sometimes on the side of sample names:

Needles to say that the manual don't tell a single information about that.
After using the AKAI S900 for years I still havent figured out when it comes out and WHAT DOES IT MEAN.
In fact the mysterious symbol is not always shown:

But sometimes it appears after sample name:

Fit an Amiga 600 floppy drive on the AKAI S900
This is the experience of a guy that succefully fitted an Amiga 600 floppy drive on an AKAI S900.

Just use the original cable that's inside the AKAI and it works straight away!
When you open the case it looks like it's necessary to remove the main board and the front panel before being able to remove the floppy drive, but with a little care it's possible to unfit just that kind of dissipator on the right by unscrewing the 4 screws on the right side of the rack and unplugging all the wires.
Maybe it's not very nice to see if you don't build a front cover or something but it works flawlessly and since Amiga 600 drives are cheap and easily found on Ebay this solution it's worth considering before going for an original replacement drive.
Thanx to Breska for the information and the photo!
PS: I've been reported of a voice that US Amiga drives are different from european ones. It seems like that only the euorpean ones are working with the AKAI S900. We haven't been able to check this yet but I'd advise to make sure you use an european drive.

AKAI instructional video clip for the S900
I've been pointed to this nice download, a video-manual for the AKAI S900 from an old VHS tape!

It explains neatly all the features of the machine and how to operate them. The style of the video is remarkable, with 3D graphix from eighties!

The DOWNLOAD is a bit long, 500 mb and the quality of the encoding a little crap, but no AKAI S900 user can live without this piece of footage!

Thanx to RHYTHM MONSTER from the sp forum who uploaded this original AKAI instructional video clip for the S900 post on the MPC forum

WHY an AKAI S900/S950 nowadays?
Not difficult to reply: its AD-DA converters. They have an unique character and even if they work at 12-bits the punch delivered is massive, and holes your mix easily. Its sound is really cool, I can browse 100 samples loading them into Kontakt or any other Vsampler and it's very difficult to find something not boring, not dull, not already heard. Put the same samples into the AKAI S900 and they start kicking and stimulating again. Maybe it's me? I bet most people hasn't been lucky enough to find out theirself...
More reasons:
Well a sampler is useful to load "side" sounds that don't need that much versatility, like some snare, hi-hats, or whatever, so one gets a few channel freed from the audio card. Not bad.
Can be used as an FX as described here: if you are lazy and you really need modern plugins' features you can run the final signal into it and get AKAI sound for any audio source. Nice. Very nice as a distortion unit also.
It can sound stupid, but sometimes take your head out of the monitor and program sounds on a LCD display can help you to distract a little and find new ways to do things. Different ideas emerge from different approaches. Tools are not only devices to develop already shaped ideas, they are also ways to shape new ideas...
This sounds like a 1986 commercial...;)

Need help on loading samples into the AKAI S900?
...This is not really easy...I know...
I've gone crazy for months before finding a working way and even that suddently stopped working for apparently no reason for nearly one year. Now things are working fine but I bet there are many users out there that simply can't get the damn thing to work!

Since some of you contacted me privately telling me their desperation I decided to help people wanting to upload some samples into the machine. Send me your .WAVS and I'll send you back an image of a floppy with the sounds in it, so you can simply convert it into floppy using OmniFlop and load it into the AKAI S900.
Limit for this free offer if of one floppy per person, as MIDI sample dump is SLOOOOOOW!

This is a samplekit from the MICROTONIC VST plugin, the program is NU Electro. I needed this kit for a track that I'm working on and I felt like to share it with other AKAI users. Please note: this is not a dump of digitally bounced samples, but an analog sampling into the AKAI.

Instruments are mapped as in the original version, from note C1 to G1.
More presets to come in the future...

HOW TO: Upload samples from PC to AKAI S900
I've been trying different solutions both floppy or MIDI dump based.
The floppy one was not possible under XP as AKAIDISK don't work with that operating system. MIDI sample dump was the most obvious option but the standard is not that supported by sample editors.
The only working system is S900 Dump 1.0. It's a simple command run from CMD that sends a file to a sample slot thru a MIDI channel using a MIDI device...

This is the homepage of the program, it contains and updated version.
IMPORTANT: only MONO 16 bit files are allowed. Don't try with STEREO, they won't work.
Samples will be truncated to 12 bit automatically.
ALSO IMPORTANT: Be aware that the AKAI S900 samplers need to "handshake" so the MIDI IN and the MIDI OUT need BOTH to be connected to the computer.
Transfer is a little slow, patience. Better save them to floppy as soon as they're uploaded on the AKAI...
If you experience losses on name files or weirdness in sample start/end try uploading the sample just after having switched the AKAI on and save the sample immediately to disk. This way you just upload->save, upload->save and you don't lose any data. Entering sample names with the rotary encoder is quite a long task!
You can make your life MUCH easier by configuring the Windows contextual menu as the following:

Five different entries have been created (for sample slot 1-5) into the registry keys found in HKEYS_CLASSES_ROOT>*>SHELL>MIDI DUMP CH#1>command and inserting this value "C:\AUDIO\SAMPLES\s900dump.exe "%1" -m 2 -n 1"
Use your own path to the executable and configure arguments to suite your MIDI device. To do that correctly check the following list of options:
S900DUMP v1.0 - (c) 2001 Juan Carlos Rodrigo Garcia.
Use: s900dump wavefile [-m|-midiport midiPort] [-n|-number smpNumber]
[-a|-name "samplename"] [-r|-replay O|L|A] [-v|-reverse no|yes]
[-s|-start smpStart] [-e|-end smpEnd] [-l|-loop smpLoop]
[-o|-loud smpLoudness] [-p|-pitch smpPitch] [-c|-crossfade no|yes]
Options:
wavefile : Path to wave file. 16bit-mono
-m|-midiport : Midi out port. Choose one from this list:
(0) Sint. SW Microsoft GS Wavetable
(1) MPU-401
(2) Delta 1010LT MIDI
-n|-number : Current number of samples in your S900/S950.
-a|-name : AKAI sample name. Max 10 characters.
-r|-replay : Replay mode. (O)ne shot | (L)ooping | (A)lternating.
-v|-reverse : Sample reversed. no|yes.
-s|-start : Sample start point. Measured in samples.
-e|-end : Sample end point. Measured in samples.
-l|-loop : Sample loop-length. Measured in samples.
-o|-loud : Sample loudness. Range: -50 to 50.
-p|-pitch : Pitch, in 1/16 semitones (960=C3). Range: 384 to 1536.
-c|-crossfade : Velocity crossfade sample. no|yes.
-?|-h|-help : Show this help.
This is more difficult to explain than to do, but at the end you can upload samples directly from the sample directory without the need to type anything in the CMD prompt.
ADDENDUM: Here's a ready registry key to add a contextual menu voice under Windows XP (valid for sample slot 1). You'll need to edit the path to the .EXE and ID of your MIDI device and you can copy and modify it also for other slots easlily.

HOW TO: Upgrade to OS 4 your AKAI S900
If you want to upgrade to the new OS 4 do the following:
Download the floppy disk image from here.
Unzip it and transfer it to a blank disk as you would do with any other floppy image, following the instructions in this post.
Now put your floppy into the AKAI S900 and POWER it ON. The OS will load automatically from disk.

There are a few new features that at the moment I haven't been able to investigate. Nice to know there's still something to discover about my sampler :)
Warning: Programs saved under OS 4 ARE NOT compatible with older OS. This means that you have to load the new OS everytime you power the AKAI on before loading OS 4 programs.

HOW TO: Load samples from AKAI S900 to computer
Save any samples to an AKAI floppy disk and proceed as described here to transfer the image of the disk to your computer. Remember: If you run OS 4 on the AKAI you must turn off SAMPLE COMPRESSION from the DISK menu, or you won't be able to access sample data later.
You should end up with a .IMG file on your computer.
Change extension of that file to .RAW and load it on Wavelab. You will be prompted to provide some information about data format. Behave as follows:

If you use a different sample editor you may need to experiment a little with configurations, but shouldn't be too difficult to get the same results.
Now you have the floppy image data loaded as sample. The very first part usually will be some noise, as it's the interpretation of programs, disk format and other data different from samples. But the rest are your samples, one after the other. Simply cut and save them as 16bit MONO .WAV files.

This is the easiest and fastest way to transfer samples to a PC. I've been trying with MIDI dump but it seems like it works only in the other direction, PC->AKAI, as I will explain in a future post.

HOW TO: Use the AKAI S900 as an effect unit
Most of you are lazy, but still want the AKAI sound in your music. The solution is simple: run an external signal through the AKAI: LINE-IN -> MIX-OUT
Configure the frontal knobs as follows:

..and connect the MIX OUT to a channel on your mixer.

From now anything can be sampled into and played back from the AKAI in real time, giving its conversion character to any audio source you will feed and without the hassle to sample, edit, cut, program, save into floppies etc.
The beautiful is that you can still use the other 8 outputs for any other sample to be played back. Or you can feed one of this samples again into the AKAI-FX.
Not to mention feedbacks...
Enjoy :)
